The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York |
This Memorial Day weekend, the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park stood as a steadfast gathering point for Western New York families paying tribute to veterans.
On the parkâs grounds, 7,300 American flags flutteredâeach representing a veteran lost to PTSD every year.
The ceremonies began with a moving âTolling the Boatsâ tribute for fallen submariners and continued with a screening of âThe Fighting Sullivans,â capturing the sacrifice of five brothers during World War II.
Memorial Day services drew crowds to the Vietnam Memorial for a non-denominational service, complete with full military honors and the Buffalo Brass Quintetâs solemn prelude.
Special recognition was given to Hispanic American, Vietnam, and African American veterans, highlighting the diversity of military contributions.
Brian Luallen, park president, underscored the weekendâs purpose: reflection, unity, and gratitude.
Through each flag and tribute, the community remembered the true meaning of Memorial Dayâhonoring lives given in service. Read More... |
The Buffalo Marathon marked its 25th year by welcoming around 7,500 runners from 49 states and 14 countries to downtown Buffalo.
The weekend featured a range of races, including a full marathon, half marathon, and 5K, as well as family activities.
Participants followed a fast, flat route, taking in iconic spots like Hoyt Lake, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, and Delaware Park, highlighting Buffaloâs urban charm and natural beauty.
Co-Race Director Kim Fenter celebrated the eventâs rapid growth from just 400 runners in 2001, attributing it to the attractive course and its qualification for the Boston Marathon.
Downtown Buffalo transformed into a lively festival, with 1,500 volunteers supporting the races and strengthening community spirit.
Organizers remain committed to promoting health, fitness, and local pride, aiming to welcome even more runners in the years ahead. Read More... |
